Craig, I have not tried the installer. I've posted the DCL which I've used
in the past to install perl on a cluster at the Elias Sports Bureau; it uses
the Backup utility to move the files over to the destination tree; and then
creates an updated DCLTABLES.EXE with perl installed as a (foreign) command.

While it's not for everyone, it works fine for me, and avoids all those
(xxxx) unixsms to set protections. It's a typical system manager's hacking
approach; but I've been happy with it since 5.4.

I would expect that it will be difficult to get the unix-based install code
working properly on VMS (just a guess, as I've not looked at it). Installing
software on VMS requires a certain, well, "VMSness", if you know what I
mean. I think this might all be avoided, or worked-around, if we ever get to
a PCSI kit (hint, hint, to Compaq).

Ed,

I think it's just a broken installer problem, not a problem with Perl
itself. The install problems will probably be fixed by applying the
patch previously posted on this list and available at:

<http://www.xray.mpe.mpg.de/mailing-lists/vmsperl/2000-04/msg00134.html>

Unfortunately you'll have to reconfigure and rebuild since the patch
modifies subconfigure.com. Let us know whether or not that does the
trick; I don't think the installer gets widely tested since a lot of
people just build in the target location and leave it there.
