If you build perl with the PERLSHR_USE_GSMATCH logical set, perl sets the 
image ID for the perlshr shared image. That means that if you build another 
perl (either the same version or a newer one) that has the same options, 
you can drop it in without rebuilding your extensions.

Yes.

Pretty close, I think. There are some lingering issues with 64-bit perl 
(which seem to only crop up on VMS, and I've not had time to track them 
down) and Alan Burlison is tracking down lots of memory leaks that showed 
up in perl 5.005 or later.
