but does that lose the idea that the installation prefix is overridable?
Other installation choices that are overridable but get decided have
phrases like "it would be such and such by default..." hence default
indicates what would automatically happen, although when specifying
directories on VMS the word "default" is loaded and has a different and
rather particular meaning (the pwd). Would the following phrase convey
the overridability and everything else clearly?:
