It's likely that this would get past the error that is stopping you
in your tracks.  It's unlikely it would really be setting permissions
in the way it intends to, but it's equally unlikely that doing so
would be necessary.  It's the equivalent of SET
FILE/PROTECTION=(O:RWE,G:RE,W:RE).

If you have the opportunity to try [EMAIL PROTECTED] or later, I would
appreciate confirmation that my Itanium changes have not caused any
problems on VAX.  You can get it via

$ rsync -avz ftp.linux.activestate.com::perl-current perl

Last I heard the rsync port to VMS was still incomplete, but you can
execute the above command on anything unixy (including Mac OS X) or
Windows with CygWin installed.  Then set owner write permissions, zip
or tar up the perl tree and you have your own snapshot.
