I think there are some 5.6.1 binaries around, in case that helps,

Thanks, but if anyone knows any links I'd be grateful. I've Googled
every combination I can think of but without success :-(
The source is here:

On second thought I don't know of any VAX binaries built from that kit.
The first thing I would try would be to see if a newer version of
Time::HiRes from CPAN has any workarounds for the absence of
gettimeofday(). The second thing I would try would be to excise
Time::HiRes from the kit and see if you can live without it.
Mmmm...this is where I may be revealing my ignorance :-o
Given that the kit apparently builds OK generally (it looks like
gettimeofday is only defined in CRTL post-VMS 7) I believe we should
be
able to do without it, but I don't know how to set about excluding it.
Trawling through various postings suggests that even if I can cut it
out
of the build I'm likely to hit problems in testing. Hints welcome!
There will be a directory, either [ext.Time.HiRes] or [.ext.Time-
HiRes], that you can simply remove (or replace with a newer version of
the module from CPAN). The relevant tests would be under that
directory so if you remove the whole directory they wouldn't run.
