Hi Dan, I had similar problems on Windows 7, both with VMTK 0.9.0 as well as with VMTK compiled from nightly source. It seemed like almost anything I did would trigger the "python.exe has to close" message, which obscures and halts the command prompt, so there's not even a chance to see any debugging information.
After much frustration, I finally installed a virtual machine of Ubuntu, compiled the latest VMTK from source, and I now run VMTK through VMware's Unity feature (which hides the Linux desktop and treats Linux X-windows objects such as the terminal like a Windows window). It works like a dream. Compiling with SuperBuild (which didn't work for me in Windows) was incredibly easy, all VMTK features that I have tried work, plus I can use the Linux terminal to run VMTK from any directory with benefits like tab completion of commands. I didn't have to migrate my entire system over to Linux, but I get to use VMTK without headaches. I know this doesn't exactly solve your problem, but VMware Player, Ubuntu, and VMTK are all free software, and for what it's worth, this works great for me.
