 thanks for the feedback. 
We'll need to stress test the Windows 7 build for the next release. Probably
a different build would do. 
For the time being, I'm afraid Ian's solution is the best way to go, unless
you can run on some other Windows version - it looks like several users
use vmtk on Windows, so it may be a 7 or 64bit issue.
