For your purpose, better get the tar or tgz distribution. With that one, you
have to install it the way you describe above.

Check the rmp manual pages (`man rpm`) and look for the option just to
extract the files to your  location.

You don't need that if you have the tightvnc distro. ARe you sure you like
to run the install_vnc.sh script? That does the hooks in /etc/.. etc... If
you can extract the files, you can read this script and do the actions
manually.
