I'd hope so, that said I've only tried tightvnc and realvnc 3.3.5. Maybe
there are other servers I could try.
Eh, how about this:
I just tried x0rfbserver and connected locally to it on my laptop, which
of course gives a weird effect of displaying the desktop onto itself in
a loop, but I did get to see my xmms fonts fine, which leads me to
believe that maybe the X configuration spawned by vncserver has
something missing and is responsible for the bad display of xmms.
At this point, I'd say that it's not necessarily a bug with how
vncserver transmits the data for the xmms window, but maybe a bug with
the X session that vncserver spawns.

I had the same problems on two different machines, and it worked fine
when I ran x0rfbserver instead.
I'd say that the problem is with the X session from vncserver at this
point.
I'm however not quite sure how to fix it yet.
