Just an update:
I installed a font server as recommended, and it didn't fix anything.
The fonts show up just fine under XFree, but some of them will not work
under Xvnc, this with or without a font server.

I've fixed the problem by changing fonts in xmms until I found one that
would display properly under Xvnc, but obviously the problem in Xvnc is
still there.
