It looks to me like it could be a problem with Xvnc not being able to read
the fonts that xmms is using.  If you've got a font server (xfs) running on
your linux box you could try doing:

  xset fp= tcp/localhost:7100

This tells Xvnc to use the font server instead.  Other people have reported
that this has fixed similar issues before.
