I believe I found the root of all my problems--a DSL modem supplied my msn.com. I've found a way to flash the firmware to change it to a SMC modem, which I intend to do tonight. With the new firmware, I should be able to get past the DSL modem into my computer, where I'm sure I'll encounter a whole new mess of problems.
