That was not my experience. It wouldn't work until I made the registry
changes on the workstation running VNC server. I had to edit the keys for
'AutoPortSelect' under HKLM and 'PortNumber' and 'AutoPortSelect' under HKCU.
Leaving the keys alone and just changing the Display Number and unchecking
the 'Auto' box on the Current User Properties dialog didn't work. The
display number setting on the dialog box has to be "1" and the registry key
has to force listening on port 5901. If both of these things don't agree,
then it won't work.

And as for the quote from the FAQ, It seems to me that there is no other use
for the display number setting besides changing the listening port. If
that's the case then the setting should be renamed. If there really is a
case where the 'display number' setting actually controls something other
than which port the server is listening on, (which I didn't see in the
documentation, but I could be wrong), then there should be a completely
separate element to control the listening port separate from the display
number.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate all of the help. I'm just giving the
impressions of a new user. From my standpoint, the documentation wasn't
clear that BOTH changes had to be made, and the apparent dual-functionality
of the display-number setting was confusing at best.

Reading the FAQ:
http://www.realvnc.com/faq.html#firewall
"If N is the display number of a particular VNC server then it will accept
connections on port 5900+N."

You don't.
