Niklas, 640x480 witrh 16 colours is an old VGA mode, and is the default when the system is booting in "Safe Mode", even if the display settings say otherwise. Windows 95/98/Me/XP will boot to Safe Mode if it is rebooting after a system crash - are you sure that's not what's happening?
