I am trying to help my son correct some issues with his personal computer and have had 
both of us download the latest full version of VNC. (completed 2/17/04)  Both of our 
personal computers are running Windows XP Home Edition and I have turned off user fast 
switching on both.  His computer which I would like to access remotely, has a cable 
modem from his local cable company and my ISP is a DSL line from our local phone 
company.  I can ping his computer from mine obviously using his IP address however 
when I attempt to connect to his computer using the VNC viewer I constantly receive 
the same error message which is failed to connect to server.  I have called him to 
insure that he has his VNC Server indeed running which he does as he confirmed it in 
two ways, one confirming that the V in the V2 icon at the bottom of the screen was 
indeed green and two, when he went to his programs menu and clicked on the program to 
launch it, it said another version of the program was already!
 running or something to that effect.  Not wanting to sound stupid, is the following 
assumption correct on my part:
 
To access his computer from mine, I simply open up the VNC viewer and put in his IP 
address.  I have tried this as well as tried adding :0 and :1 to the end of the IP 
address with no luck.  Is this the correct procedure on my part?  By the way, I walked 
him through his setup on the phone and confirmed that he is set to go including making 
sure his password was put in.  I also confirmed that he (nor I) have any firewalls up 
and running.
