Okay, as I am taking suggestions and doing a bit of troubleshooting, here is what I've found:
I have removed vnc executables from the Norton firewall configuration completely, in the 'hopes' that it would prompt me that vnc was trying to get out to the internet when I ran the viewer. Thus, with NIS enabled, I got instead a vnc error box "server closed connection unexpectedly". No NIS prompt at all. So, are there any reasons that vnc would give me that message? I am not running vnc as a service in user mode or in service mode on the remote machine (as I thought that it only needed to be running on the host machine). I'll keep trying here....
