Hello Wez,

not quite....I was trouble shooting and that is why I mentioned the NIS
proxy. VNC viewer will not run at all when NIS is enabled, regardless of
the setting given for the NIS proxy.

Scenario: I am attempting to connect to a host (client) computer that is
running the vnc server. On the machine that is running the vnc server, NIS
is enabled. On the machine that I am attempting to connect FROM, I must
*disable* NIS on MY machine for the connection to work. Since the error I
get is vnc viewer error (server closed connection unexpectedly) I assume it
is a problem on the machine that is running the vnc viewer. I don't mean to
sound redundant here, but that is what it is.

When trouble shooting on the viewer end, I see that NIS proxy service goes
out with every internet enabled program. It asks me if I want to permit it
first. Now, the NIS proxy works fine with pcanywhere, and gotomypc. It
will not work with vnc viewer that I can see, at all. I have configured NIS
firewall to monitor and allow connections to and from computers over port
5900n, and 5800n.

Despite all that, it does not seem to matter.

In the end, I must still disable NIS2003 if I want to run the vnc viewer.

Now, I am awaiting a response from Symantec regarding this issue, but it's
been a week and not a peep.

I am playing with the idea that vnc viewer port 5900 is also a port used by
a known trojan horse. I only say this because I simply don't know what else
to look for, configure, or zap with my special program application tazer
gun. Sorry to make this a long response, just wanted to be clear.

So, no, vnc viewer will not run regardless of settings for nis proxy.

Best,
Elke
