I'm sorry for the mixed message here -

the problem occurs on the machine running the viewer; I can't run the viewer
when NIS is enabled.  Even though I have added it to NIS firewall
configuration.

VNC server machines can have NIS enabled, and I can 'get in' (again, only
when I disable NIS on the viewer end).
