This sounds so familiar. I have the same problem with 4.0b4 running on Windows XP and connecting to it from another XP box with Win2VNC (the Windows version of x2vnc). It's very annoying because I have to start a second connection to send the CTRL-ALT-DEL and the password. After that I can use the previous connection again as it was before. I've run winvnc with logging on and the only remarkable items were related to desktop switches and that winvnc could not access (or was it open) those. I didn't have time to go into the code and/or do more debugging. Maybe this desktop thing is a pointer. I'm not sure if this is related to running in service mode and user priviledges.
