Anand, VNC 4 will operate over any TCP/IP compatible network. This includes dial-up network connections that provide TCP/IP support.
The most probable cause of your machines being unable to communicate is that the default gateways specified are not addresses within the same subnet as the corresponding machines, so the machines have no way to reach them, i.e. no way to route data to anywhere else... You'll find that no networked applications will work between them - it's not a VNC-specific issue.
