JimD,

This isn't anything to do with VNC, I'm afraid.

It sounds like something has trashed your XP installation or user profile so
that explorer.exe isn't being run when you log in.  If you press
Control-Alt-Del and use Task Manager to run explorer.exe, you'll probably
find that things look more normal.
