Rachel,

It just sounds like what you're seeing is the effects of your home network
connection being very slow compared to your LAN.  In particular, the up-link
of the server-side LAN to the Internet is probably of the order of 256Kbps,
while your LAN will be approximately 400 times faster.

Links as slow as 64 or even 33Kbps can support usable VNC sessions, but it
does depend on what you're doing - highly graphical intensive applications
will fare less well over very slow links than office productivity
applications such as word-processors or mail user agents.
