Turns out that I was running Xvnc from /usr/dist/exe instead of
/usr/local/bin where vncserver is installed. There was a conflict
which was slowing everything down. I changed my path so that
/usr/local/bin was listed before /usr/dist/exe and everything is
   working great!
   Thanks for your help!

Rachel,

It just sounds like what you're seeing is the effects of your home network
connection being very slow compared to your LAN. In particular, the up-link
of the server-side LAN to the Internet is probably of the order of 256Kbps,
while your LAN will be approximately 400 times faster.

Links as slow as 64 or even 33Kbps can support usable VNC sessions, but it
does depend on what you're doing - highly graphical intensive applications
will fare less well over very slow links than office productivity
applications such as word-processors or mail user agents.

Hi James, The solaris viewer is on the same
network as the
vncserver. I actually tried viewing it on a windows
box at work
(also on the same network), and it was a lot of faster!
So, it must be
something wrong with my configuration at home :(

Rachel,

Is the Solaris viewer that you're using on the same network
as the server?

Subject: vncviewer is slow on windows

Hi Everyone,

I am running vncserver on my Unix (Solaris) workstation and
when I open
a viewer on either Windows 2000 or XP from home, the response is very
very slow for me, almost to the point where it is unusable. I have
Comcast broadband at home and both computers are at least 1.7Ghz or
higher. I can open up a viewer on another Solaris box
without any slow
response times. Why is my viewer slow on windows but not on Solaris?

Thanks!
Rachel
