I believe you've got the right idea about setting up internet access on your iBook. I'm quite sure there's more than one VNC viewer application for the Mac. That part of it is the least of your worries. You need to configure the server machine properly and that takes much more understanding than the client. The FAQ really does a great job of walking you through the whole process. However for this application, may I recommend LOGMEIN (http://www.logmein.com). You can get a free subscription which allows you to download a client to the remote PC. Once installed, the client actually is configured for your account and "reports" in to the logmein website where only you have access to it. It defeats firewalls by initiating the connection, rather than you having to initiate it. This is provided there is no egress filtering at the University. Check it out, you'll be pleasantly surprised I'm sure.
