If you only rarely install new programs then heuristic scanning is ideal,
since it can detect new infections that can then be sent to McAfee and
officially registered in a DAT file. On the other hand, it will inevitably
flag harmless code as a virus and equally may not catch a new, real virus.
I doubt it impacts performance much. On the whole, it's probably worth
using unless you install new applications frequently, in which case false
matches may cause problems as with WinVNC.
McAfee probably have more useful opinions on the matter!
