There were many billion more gallons of oil in the ground then compared to
now.  Indeed, we passed "peak oil" a few years ago.

The people who had the EV1 and EV2 loved their cars to the point of some
were arrested trying to keep them.  The EV1 was fueled by lead acid, the
EV2 by NiMH whose technology is still owned by the oil companies.
