Jones explained at length in a recent post that a running sig gen was necessary. Actual connection is not required for power transmission, e.g. the two leads of a parallel plate capacitor could be thought of as "unconnected" but they can still transmit power through the gap between the plates. At those high frequencies parasitic capacitances or some other wireless power transmission scheme could be at work here.
