Defective fly-by-wire is very scary. Can you even turn the engine off if the computer isn't listening? To heck with the odds (which no doubt say it's really pretty safe). If I had a Toyota I think I'd have it towed in. This is very different from conventional cruise control, where there's a direct physical link from the brake pedal to the master cylinder, so you can hit the brake pedal with both feet and stop pretty much no matter what the rest of the car thinks you should be doing.
