That's what I thought, but ABBYY and IrfanView both have what they call "lossless" JPG setting, and when I compare the same image in JPG and TIF format down to the pixel level, it looks the same to me. With ordinary JPG there are pronounced differences.
For this book, I may have gone overboard with "de-speckling" noise reduction. Zooming in on the text I see some parts of the letters are chopped off. I may generating another copy, maybe even in 3 parts instead of 2.
