For this book, I may have gone overboard with "de-speckling" noise reduction.

Hmm . . . I find that tweaking the noise reduction parameter leaves too much actual noise. It is a shame the software cannot distinguish between noise and letters. So I better leave well enough alone.

As we discussed here, the latest version of Acrobat software from Adobe does distinguish between noise and letters, with the "Clearscan" feature. Unfortunately it does a lousy job at OCR and it generates bloated files.

Most products from Adobe and Microsoft produce bloated output.
