Actually what I had in mind was imaging. Someone already did an experiment like this a few years back, and I found the results quite impressive. The hot spots on the cathode were very evident. Apparently there are lots of IR cameras using CCDs (http://www.globalsources.com/manufacturers/CCD-IR-Camera.html). Perhaps you could just add the suggestion to your instructions rather than actually adding a camera to the kit (or make a camera an optional extra?).
