The carbon cycle they show on page 11 is silly. The bottom line is that almost all the carbon present will initially be C12, so the entire chain simply won't happen. Any neutrons formed would combine with C12 to form C13. There would be so little C13 formed that the next step would be extremely rare. In short virtually no helium should be formed at all.
