The motivations that would lead to someone using the occasion of a political settling-of-scores to consolidate his hold on power in this manner are opaque to normal, well-adjusted people. Often you can get insight into a situation or culture by trying to get into their manner of thinking. But in this case the attempt fails, sort of like it does trying to get into the heads of the Mexican drug gangs. With these kinds of people, it's all Lord of the Flies and pure, raw, Machiavellian political calculation. Eric
