The implied question in my response to the original post was really directed more towards the actual process of producing Raney Nickel than what you can do with it thereafter. The chemical reaction is apparently strongly exothermic (in and of itself) and progresses faster at higher temperatures, so any anomalous heat could easily be overlooked - or dismissed as being the heat of combustion due to contact with O2.

Might be worth a look though, I think.
