Also, Fermi didn't know he was looking at fission prior to 1939.  He
thought he had discovered transuranic elements (elements heavier than
uranium) by adding neutrons.  It was apparent only later that the process
he had been looking at involved fission.  He added a footnote to his 1938
Nobel Prize lecture to clear up this embarrassing mistake.
