The ironic thing about the Rossi effect, in terms of the Theories and Hypotheses which are floating around in alternative energy (from those who are not convinced that anyone really understands it), is that the radiation band which is apparently absent for Rossi is ultraviolet - UV and EUV. In the Mills reaction, all the gain starts in the form of UV. This is quite a contrast. But the reality of the situation could be far more complicated
With Rossi, the driver of the reaction is either proton capture, as Focardi
taught him to believe, transmuting nickel to copper. Or else for others,
there could be a contribution of DDL (dense hydrogen) formation which does
not necessarily lead to nuclear fusion, or a little of both. And half a
dozen other hypothetical contributors, in between.
Essentially, this could mean that the Rossi effect and the Mills hydrino
effect, despite both of them being possible with the same reactants - are
fundamentally different at the core. That should be no surprise, since P&F
cold fusion is fundamentally different from either Rossi or Mills, which is
very likely to be the case.
To complicate things even more, there will be significant overlap between
all of them. Perhaps it is impossible to have a pure hydrino reaction, a
pure cold fusion reaction or a pure Rossi reaction, and now there is a
fourth category - Mizuno. But in actuality any experiment is very likely to
be a mix of some of them or all of them.
For instance, Mills may be seeing 80% of item 3) below, and 20% of 4) which
he ignores. In effect: there are four or more major categories of LENR which
intermix. With minor categories, there are at least a dozen.
1) Cold fusion of deuterium in palladium, with helium as the ash
2) The much more robust version of Mizuno, without palladium, with
nickel as the host, where deuterium disappears and no helium is seen.
Instead, the ash is mass-2.
3) The hydrino reaction of Mills/BLP which is claimed to be non-nuclear
but with copious UV emission and no transmutation
4) The Rossi effect, which is claimed to be nuclear.
4a) Focardi's version where nickel (Ni62) transmutes to
copper
4b) An alternative version involving dense hydrogen, which
then proceeds to copper.
4c) An alternative version which is non-fusion, no
transmutation, no UV, Mossbauer-like RF
4d) An alternative version involving DDL where Ni58
transmutes to Ni60, no copper
And several more major categories, the point being that in
any particular experiment, results may be slanted or weighted in such a way
that the experimenter sees what he wants to see. But in the case of Rossi,
he may be seeing gain from each avenue above except cold fusion ! (assuming
his hydrogen source contains some deuterium).
