Hi,

I don't think the size of the CF card is the problem, as I do not had any problems with grub. And I'm using:
* 8GB Seagate microdrive (1 big ext2 partition)
* Alix1c
* Usb cardreader to install voyage
* Installation done on Red Hat Enterprise linux

Kind regards,
Tom

Just to add a 'me too'...

I'm using a USB cardreader to install on 1GB and 2GB CF cards for Soekris net4801s. I've found that the grub boot sector isn't being written to the cards if the boot partition is too big.

For example, a 2GB partition on a 2GB card won't boot, but using a 512MB partition on the same card works. The first 512 bytes of the device contain the word "GRUB" if it has worked.

Hope this helps someone find the cause of the problem.

Cheers,
Andrew Greig

Hi Mathieu,

I also do not know why lilo work but grub doesn't. But it is based on my experience and some reported problems. See this thread:

Hi Punky and all who tried helping me

Indeed, switching from grub to lilo made it. Why?!

I have a usb cardreader, which could also have caused some disturbances and the darn usb automounting of my xfce desktop. I had less strange output during format-cf.sh using in console-only mode than in xfce, but grub didn't work as well. I checked too, if the partition was set bootable, and it was. Strange... My system is lenny (testing), could it be that it only works with etch?

I hope that the rest will work as well and hope voyage will be growing further.
Big thx for all the answers and hints!

Mathieu

    If you can't get the grub prompt, you can try the lilo as a
    bootloader and see if it works. This sometimes happens if you are
    running voyage.update on a non-Debian host for installing to CF.

    Punky
