That sounds wrong.  When you enter  a directory in the url gadget
(local file or online) V tries to find index.html, and display that. 
If that doesn't exist, it will display a directory listing.

The only exceptions to this I can think of are:

You don't have permission to view the directory listing (but only if
you are using some sort of multi user file system or are entering an
online directory)

You are entering an invalid directory name (V doesn't like Ram Disk:
so just use ram:)

I think webserververs like Apache can be configured to send a default
document if nothing is requested (same idea as index.html)

Just click in the url gadget right-amiga o to open a local file, click
on dh0: or whatever and click ok. I've just done it and it works fine.
