I do not understand shellmod, too, but the debian package of newvserver has its own version anyway.I will try to implement a '--with-vrootdir=<DIR>' ./configure option, which hardcodes /vservers (or whatever you want) at compile-time.
Ok, it is in 0.23.96 (see [1]). The linuxconf support (which has been revived in 0.23.95) is not updated to this feature, since I do not know 'shellmod' and can not test it; patches are welcome.
I did only quick testing of --with-vrootdir and it seems to work pretty well.
I've debianized util-vserver and will contact Ola Lundquist, the
debian maintainer of the vserver package.
