Opinions/comments:

1) I have rods with single foot guides; they came that way from the
factory. I don't think they are as durable as standard snake. I have a rod
to build, and I'm using doubles.

2) Re: gold guides. I have a Sage 490-4RPL that has gold guides, both
stripping and snake guides, made by a prominent unnamed English company (the
same that provides Sage its guides). The rod has had light use, and much of
the finish is gone.
