Hi Darin,
Not speaking from personal experience, but Manuel who used to own the
fly shop in PA, told me that one of his customers used to do very well at
Port Williams just north of the mouth of Sequim Bay. Coho tend to be more
school-oriented than cutts and move about a bit more. Beach configuration
seems to be more important than the type of bottom since the tidal flow
around a geographical feature like a point concentrates the bait, be it
zooplankton or baitfish. I tie a pretty simple and effective amphipod
pattern on a size 14 or 16 Tiemco 2487 scud hook. Tie in about 8 to 10
strands of orange Krystalflash and leave it trail, make a dubbing loop and
dub the body with cream-colored dubbing. Bring the Krystalflash over the
back and tie it down at the head to form a shellback and pick out the
dubbing underneath to represent legs. Fish it dead drift in the tidal
current, and retrieve line just enough to keep the line taut.
Goo luck,
Preston Singletary
