I'd like to second the vote for the Okuma Sierra reels. I began carrying
these units about 6 months ago and am amazed at the quality/price ratio.
These are precision die cast aluminum that is machined on the external
surfaces and then painted with black enamel (yes, it's improving a bit.)
The one way clutch stainless steel roller bearing makes them very smooth.
They have a Teflon disc drag that is smooth although only about 1/4
revolution of the available ~1 1/2 is effective in adjusting the drag; still
if works very well. Besides the exceptionally low price ($36 - $52 is the
range I've seen which is a thin margin for this business) on the reels the
additional spools only cost about $21 - $28. These have become very popular
this year.
Let me know if you'd like some homespun jpegs that include the inner
workings and parts blow-up.

A Guide I can highly recommend as both a guide and teacher
is Dennis Dickson he can be reached at,
www.flyfishsteelhead.com or email at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
His web page also has lots of information on both equipment
and technique, and you should check in at least weekly as he
updates often. He has one article on reels that should be
of interest and if economy is an issue I can personally
recommend the Okuma serria in the 8/9 size, it has a good
enough drag, a critical feature with steelhead and salmon,
its only drawback is the paint finish, it scratches although
they have improved it some, but the price, for what you get
is unbelievable, 35-70.00 depending on size and dealer. in
closing good luck, welcome to the group, and hope to see you
on the rivers.
