Okuma Sierra reels are available at Outdoor Emporium in Seattle.
A few months ago, I bought a 9ft 3wt St. Croix Legend Ultra and
recently had a chance to fish it side by side with a friend's Sage
9ft 5wt (a Discovery, I think). Given the line weight difference
between the two, I think it's ompossible to make any objective
comparisons.
Subjectively, the Sage was much stiffer and took more effort to load
on the small stream we were fishing. I was able to pinpoint a sight
cast to a rising fish across a riffle, hook, play and land it. The
Sage performed flawlessly, offering great feel and responsiveness.
By comparison, the St. Croix felt more supple and precise, it's
lighter size probably a better match for the size of the stream and
fish that day.
The fit and finish of the St. Croix was every bit the equal of the
Sage. I'd be interested in comparing two that were the same size.
I'm more than happy with the St. Croix and would highly reccommend it
to anyone looking for a high quality, affordable rod.
