I had an unexpected chance to fish Amber Lake on Sunday from mid
afternoon until dark. Unfortunately, it was slow. Only a handful of fellow
fly fishermen were out on the lake. The few I talked to said it was quiet.
As I left home the weather was sunny but by the time I put my tube in
the water the sky had become cloudy. A stiff breeze was blowing out of the
south which made the kick to the south end of the lake seem even longer.
Started fishing a damsel fly pattern with no results. This particular
pattern had worked 10 days ago with great success. I guess a lot can
change in a week. After switching to a water boatman things began to heat.
Had a strike on the first cast and caught a nice 15" fish on the second.
Had a couple more takes but missed the set. Things slowed down after that
so I tried a #14 bh prince nymph and again got strike on the first cast. I
landed 14" rainbow and ended up catching one more before heading back
toward the launch. Fished the deep water 50 yards south of the boat launch
as the wind died down and the skies cleared just before dark with a black
wooly bugger (no results).
I did not observe any major hatches occurring and saw very few fish
rise the whole time I was out. I did get a kick out of watching 3 ospreys
circling and diving on the lake in search of dinner. Overall, it was a
slow but enjoyable day.
