"Usens" who have fished for salmon by "proper"
mooching before being converted to "The Long Rod" had
a chuckle at the tackle as described: "short, stiff
rods, etc" in the subject report.
I fwded this message to my relatives who do salmon
fishing out of the San Francisco area and received
this reply:
"Sounds like the person that went mooching for salmon
out of Berkley actually climbed onto a midweek
rockfish fishing boat that, because of rough water or
"light-weight" passengers couldn't get out to where
the fish were. So instead they stayed close to the
coast and caught salmon on rockfish gear. They call
it a "Safeway Run", about as exciting as a run to the
Safeway store".
Seriously though, there is an art to salmon mooching
with the proper gear which is just barely below fly
fishing for fun and suspense.
Just thought I'd reminesce along with Preston about
the "good ole days".
Incidentally, Jere, I believe that a Tyee salmon at
Campbell River (ie. Painters Lodge) is any King Salmon
over 30 pounds (and caught by their special rules ie.
rowing, etc). Ah! Tradition!
Best of Fishing to all.
John T.
