You can get a selection of the Canadian mooching rod at Outdoor Emporium in
Seattle. They carry Shimano single action mooching reels and Shimano
mooching rods. Outdoor Emporium is located at Pontius and Republican in
Seattle, but soon to be getting the boot in the great South Lake Union
redevelopment cum Seattle Commons Diaspora because Paul Allen has a special
interest in that area and has purchased their building. For now, it is
still the Fishing Temple I bow to every morning.
Mooching rods are also available just across the border in Surry, BC at
Berry's Bait and Tackle. Their web address is: berrysbait.com. Mooching
rods come in mostly 10.5 ft lengths, some are longer, and they come w/
different actions: very limber w/ a full bend to a more tippy action. I
have fished these rods and the center pin or "single action" Shimano reel
for 15 years and they are a lot of fun. Berry's also sells a selection of
center pin casting reels for steelhead and salmon fishing w/ floats, also a
lot of fun.
I started fishing circle hooks last year during the sockeye fishery using
just the circle hook on a leader behind the flasher thinking it would help
land more soft mouthed sockeye. I am not sure I proved that theory, but we
landed lots of fish and the rod w/ the Gamakatsu circle hook leader was not
out produced by the regular Gamakatsu hook and the numbers landed were about
equal.

PS: I do remember reading an article years ago about Zane Grey fishing at
Campbell River and his attempts to get into the double tyee club: catching
a 60 pound Chinook. I can't remember if he had success. And, if my aging
memory serves me, Linc's Fishing tackle and Honda used to carry an updated
stainless version of the Winona reel made locally, even.

Ah, 30 lbs, not 50..now you know my divisible factor when I refer to fish
size.....and I remember now; you can only use artificials, not bait to
qualify for the Tyee Club. Quite nostalgic. I spent some time in acquiring
a 10 1/2 ft. mooching rod like I used in Cambell River. We caught primarily
silvers, when I was there, but it was extremely fun. We used the single
action reels, 1-2 oz.'s of lead as Preston described and those long,
graphite rods and long leaders. I purchased a single action reel when I
returned to the states, but could not get a comparable rod. Diawa made a
rod for the States and marketed the long rod for Canada and you couldn't get
the long rod here in the states. I wrote to Diawa of Canada and they sent
me two of the long rods. Jere
