Interesting that the ban would not include a weighted line since with the weighted  flies I tie it rotates the hook up therefore does not line the fish in the back like a sinking line would with an unweighted fly with a down turned hook. If  Kraemer the biologist really wanted to make an impact he would coordinate with law enforcement to actually patrol the areas  in which the Chinook spawn not just his monday through Friday 9-5 shift but just before dark when the poachers come out of the woodwork. In reality the Chinook he speaks of spawns pretty much above the C-post area and to ban weighted flies  on the entire north fork is a pathetic attempt to save the salmon. If people really want to save the endangered Chinook then perhaps a good place to start would be with the nets that are in the lower river right now. There are more Chinook indiscriminately taken by those nets than any or all of the weighted flies on the entire system. Curt Kraemer giv! ! e me a break!

Subject: Weighted flies banned on N.Fk Stilly

The WDFW announced yesterday that weighted flies will be prohibited on the
N. Fk of the Stillaguamish from Aug. 20 through Oct. 15.  The action was
taken because anglers have been deliberately targeting wild spawning chinook
who are schooled up in a few deeper holes in the low, warm waters that have
prevailed this summer.  Sad to relate, most of these fish have been
foul-hooked and the purpose of the ban is to prevent any additional stress
to them.  This rule change has been put in place to protect the spawning
chinook while still allowing the angler to fish for steelhead and sea-run
cutthroat.  If the harassment of chinook doesn't stop, it is still possible
that the North Fork may be closed to all fishing.
