Sean had mentioned that he did not think the Okuma Sierras are durable. So
far, between myself and friends and associates I know of at least 25 that
have been in use for at least a year. About half of these get fairly heavy
use. To this point I don't know of anyone who has had any problems. I
would be very surprised if these don't last 10 or 20 years or more.

I think this is the typical situation of different strokes for different
folks. Some wouldn't be caught dead with a reel that cost less than $200 or
$300 no matter how good it is. I have a couple of fishing buddies who hear
me comment on the Okuma reels but neither of them even cares to try mine for
a few minutes because they think the cost is too low. Others, myself
included, are primarily concerned about finding a good reel that is a good
value. I've used a lot of different less-than-$100 reels and so far none
have come close to the value of the Okumas. Are the $200+ reels better? In
most cases, yes. Are they worth it? That depends on who you're talking to.

I have not seen them for $29, but I get mine at Outdoor Emporium in Seattle
for the low $30's. Spare spools are about $17. They can easily be swapped to
left or right hand retrieve, and are silent on retrieve. The paint wears off
quite easily, but to me that is no big deal. In saltwater they have a
problem with the bearing rusting. I try to wash them after every trip in
salt water, and try to keep them greased up in that enviroment.

All in all, they are quite a fine reel for the money.
