Brian Lencho and I traveled to the Clearwater/Snake/Grand Ronde this past weekend also. We didn't fish the Clearwater because we heard it was slow. The fact that I had been skunked for the past two weekends may have had something to do with the slowness.
We left Seattle saturday morning and were fishing the Snake by 2pm. Brian had three grabs and I continued my steelhead slump. Sunday morning, we joined the crowd up at Schumaker Canyon on the Ronde. The water was extremely cold and very low. We fished big, heavy flies on long leaders on floating lines with light two-handers. We fished through a couple secondary runs and left for the Snake after seeing all the other runs we wanted to fish filled. Brian had a couple more pulls while I continued my slump. The confluence of the Snake and Grand Ronde was filled with jetboats taking good advantage of the fact that the fish were holding in the mix of the warm Snake water and colder Ronde water. That afternoon on the Snake, I hooked a fish that grabbed my 2/0 Streetwalker, ran downriver and jumped, came back up and wallowed, then turned and ran to me just as I was getting her on the reel. Needless to say, the slump continues. Leland.
