Gosh, I apologize for that errant message to all.  This darn notebook  is really sensitive on the touchpad and I've got neanderthal control of my fingers - no wonder I never became a brain surgeon (other factors not withstanding.) :)

What would be the range for an 8 wt?

Ray,

AFTMA Line Fly Line Standard for an 8wt is 210gr with a range of 202-218gr.

A good discussion on "uplining" occurred on Dan Blanton's Bulletin Board two months ago.  Hope its acceptable to post this.  Link is http://www.danblanton.com/Bul10-01.html.   Scroll down to the "Uplining" question.   One of the contributors to that discussion was Bruce Richards who is a fly line designer for, I believe, Scientific Anglers.  Interesting industry insider comments.

Also,  if the topic interests you, there is a pseudo-scientific article that was written (Rod Stiffness and Line Weight Rating) on the Fly Casting Forum.  Link to that article is
http://home.att.net/~slowsnap/index.htm.  Scroll down to topic 5 "Fly Rod Evaluation And Calibration."  I did the experiment with my 6 and 8 wt rods and was amazed how accurate the procedure turned out to be.

I know its more than you asked for, but , to me this is a very interesting topic.  Searching for the perfect balance can be like searching for the Holy Grail.

Greg
